Russell RA pinxt./1800-' (upper left) pastel and bodycolour 23½ x 16 5/8in. (59.7 x 42.2cm.) Of the several 'Matthews' listed for this period, only one attained the rank of the sitter. John Matthews was made a Captain on 13th September 1793 and was still serving in this rank when he died on 21st March 1798, indicating this is a posthumous commemorative image.
