Johnson Date: 1886 Description: 101, 121, 35, [3] pp. With 65 hand-colored maps (46 are double-page) plus insets; 12 hand-colored plates showing: world time differences, flags of the world (double-page with tears & tape repairs), 5 charts showing the heights of mountains and lengths of rivers of the world (on two pages), 9 physical maps (on 7 pages), and the East and West Hemispheres; frontispiece from an engraving of the U.S. Capitol building; plus numerous wood engravings. With a Treatise on Physical Geography by Professor A. Guyot (Folio) 18x14½, original brown cloth decoratively blind-stamped (¼ morocco no longer present), front cover stamped and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The complete and comprehensive Johnson’s atlas of the United States and the world, with about 40 maps focusing on the Americas, over 30 of those pertaining to the United States. Double-page maps include: The World; North America; United States and several individual U.S. states and provinces of Canada; Boston; New York City and Brooklyn; Philadelphia; Vicinity or Richmond & Peninsular Campaign; Texas; West Indies; South America; France, Spain and Portugal; Germany; Italy; Austria, Turkey in Europe and Greece; Russia; Asia; India; China and Japan; Africa; Australia and East Indies; and the Roman Empire. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacks leather (including spine), rear cover detached, front nearly so, edge wear, soiling; some dampstains chiefly to margins, scattered tears, other mild wear; maps mostly very good and still nice, binding worn and in need of repair.
