Provenance Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin Catalogue Essay Since his first show in 1998, Jonathan Meese has been exploiting cultural taboos: drawing inspiration from German Expressionism, a movement coined by the horrors of war and social discontent, Meese is known as a self-proclaimed cultural exorcist and cult figure. His works are largely dominated by neo-shaman and excessively ritualistic influences, combing a variety of signs and symbols, pictures, texts, objects and word-creations that deal with every imaginable power figure as well as great historical thinkers and heroes from film and fiction. Meese creates his own universe, detached from the norm. To him, “art is born but then it’s totally independent.
