Condition : light foxing. a handsome bust photograph of johnston in confederate uniform. Barbour was Johnson's chief quartermaster, and the superintendent of the United States Arsenal at Harper's Ferry at the time of John Brown's raid in 1859. He resigned his commission to join the Confederate Army in April 1861 and worked with Turner Ashby and John Imboden to plan the capture of Harpers Ferry. In part because of an indiscreet comment made by Barbour, Union forces were alerted to the plan and burned the arsenal and abandoned the post. Barbour served for the duration of the war on Johnston's staff as his quartermaster.
