JOSEPHUS, Flavius (37-c. 101). Fünff Bücher vom Jüdischen Krieg und endlicher Zerstörung der herrlichen und gewaltigen Statt Jerusalem. Translated into German and edited by Conrad Lautenbach from the Latin version of Pseudo-Hegesippus. Strassburg: T. Rihel, 1578. 2 o (331 x 218 mm). Wide woodcut title border, numerous woodcut illustrations in text and large woodcut printer's device all COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Contempory German calf, dated "1578," sides with a wide azured arabesque border made of 12 impressions of the same block painted in red, white, black and green around a gilt central panel, upper cover stamped with the coat-of-arms of Hesse with the initals "IVS," (Haebler p. 462) lower cover stamped with the coat-of-arms of Wuerttemberg with the initials of Ambrosius Hirsch "AH" (Haebler p. 163), spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt and gauffered edges (spine ends and corners skillfully repaired). Provenance : Count Wilhelm IV or Count Ludwig IV of Hesse (both married sisters of the Ducal family of Wuertemberg, and therefore had the same coat-of arms); Baron Bethmann (item 10, description tipped in); Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher. Hegesippus was not, as the printer of this edition seems to think, the Christian historian of that name, but an editor, who made an abridgement of the De bello Judaico of Flavius Josephus.
