Divorce was rare in the 1950s, as social and religious pressures kept unhappy couples together in a limbo of despair (according to CDC statistics, there were just 2.3 divorces for every 1000 Americans in 1955). Is that why these stories were so widespread? Were zombified spouses a metaphor for being trapped in a dead marriage?
