JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Autograph letter signed ("J.J") to [George] Pelorson, n.p., n,d. [2 May 1939]. 2 pages, 60 x 100mm. (23/8 x 37/8), written in bright blue-green fountain pen ink on both sides of a printed calling card with legend "Mr. James Joyce." In French. ON THE EVE OF PUBLICATION OF FINNEGANS WAKE. Two days before the official publication date of Finnegans Wake (4 May), Joyce pens a note to Pelorson, a literary acquaintance, fellow lover of opera and the translator of Pomes Penyeach . He writes that his communication does not concern the Revue de Paris ; he asks Pelorson to look at pages 60 and 78 of an unidentified book which has just been sent to him from Dublin. He asks if Pelorsen concurs that it is curious, and adds that "E.J." will visit to pick up the book tomorrow, Friday morning. Joyce's correspondent was one of those on whom Joyce tried out the ending of Finnegans Wake . Pelorson was preparing, with the author's assistance, a substantial review of the work. His "Finnegans Wake de James Joyce ou le livre de l'homme," appeared in the Revue de Paris 46:17 (1 September 1939), pp.227-235. Apparently unpublished, not in etters of James Joyce, ed. R. Ellmann.
