JUAN GIL de Burgos (Spain, 13th century). Treatise on astronomy, chronology, astrology and mathematics in one hundred chapters. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Spain, 14th century] 2 o (270 x 205 mm). 171 leaves. Brown ink. Sephardic semi-cursive script. Numerous astronomical diagrams and chronological tables, many of these executed in red and green ink, occupying the larger part of the work. Later diagram added on the recto of the first old flyleaf at the front, with text in Hebrew and Spanish. End of chapter 100 missing, with a partial substitution on a different quality paper. (Occasional light dampstaining causing a few ink smudges, but generally excellent condition.) Modern blind and gold-tooled black morocco, two modern and two older paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: A MAGNIFICENT EARLY MANUSCRIPT OF AN IMPORTANT ASTRONOMICAL WORK, WHICH DESERVES FURTHER STUDY. The name of the author, Juan Gil appears in a gloss by the anonymous translator in the middle of chapter 26. Juan Gil de Burgos is the author of a treatise on astrology in Spanish or Portuguese in Hebrew characters in Oxford, MS Laud. Or. 282, and of an extract on the same subject in MS Opp. 707 in Oxford. In chapter 1 the author includes tables which he composed in 1272; in chapter 29 he gives calculations referring to Burgos. On fol. 168v a later hand added a horoscope for 1425. On fol. 169r there is a table on the positions of the stars during wars in Spain until 1345. PROVENANCE: 1. Chakham Kohen Ma'ali (on the recto of the first old flyleaf at the front). 2. The manuscript apparently was purchased by Jacob de [...] on 1 Nissan 5468 (= 1708) and presented to David Nieto (data provided by Neubauer, the source not located). REFERENCES: Neubauer, no. 135, p. 38-39; Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts, Jerusalem, F 4796.
