Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda
Opera cum edita, tam inedita. Madrid: Typographia regia de la Gazeta, 1780
4 volumes, 4to (257 x 188mm.), half-titles, woodcut armorial on title-pages, vol.1: 1 engraved plate, engraved portrait of Charles V, with F4 blank; vol.3: engraved diagram on p.183, with final blank leaf; contemporary red morocco (probably by Gabriel de Sancha) with greek key border, spines gilt in compartments with black morocco lettering-pieces, gilt edges, some worming at head of last few quires of vol.2, volume 4 with slight damage to upper inner corner towards the end of the volume with slight loss of text, bindings slightly rubbed
A respected edition of the works of Luis Ginés de Sepúlveda (?1490-1573), prepared by Francisco Cerdá y Rico, and according to Palau, "edicion bien impresa y apreciada". Sepúlveda was court historian and wrote accounts of the reigns of Charles V and Philip II, as well as writing works against Bartolomé de Las Casas's criticisms on the Spanish methods of rule in the Americas.
The binding is most likely to be by Gabriel de Sancha; for a named binding with similar neoclassical motifs, see British Library G18295, a copy of the Ibarra Don Quixote from 1780.
LITERATUREPalau 309312
PROVENANCEJoseph Pavon, early inscription on flyleaves (a Joseph Pavon was the author of works on the flora of Peru and Chile in the 1790s)
