Boston: Jonas Green for the author, 1735. 4to, 224 x 175 mm. (8 7/8 x 6 7/8 in.), eighteenth-century calf-backed paper boards, spine unlettered, edges sprinkled red, upper joint slightly sprung, base of spine chipped, corners worn, oversize table on p.63 (R2v) just shaved at fore-margin by binder, a small wormtrack at lower corner of I4-N4 (not affecting text), otherwise a very good, tall copy. Evans 3931; Rosenbach 28. The first Hebrew grammar published in America, with the first complete font of Hebrew type used in America. Monis (1683-1764), born in Algiers or Italy, studied at Leghorn and in Amsterdam, was a rabbi in New York and accepted baptism in 1722 prior to becoming the first instructor of Hebrew at Harvard. "The first complete fount of Hebrew types in the American colonies was that use used in the printing of Judah Monis's Hebrew Grammar..." (W. Eames, "On the Use of Hebrew Types in English America Before 1735," A.S.Friedus Memorial Volume , New York, 1929, p.481).
