KENDALL, George Wilkins (1809-1867). Narrative of the Texan Santa Fé Expedition, Comprising a Tour Through Texas, and Capture of the Texans. Bristol and London: Sherwood et al, n.d. [ca.1847]. 16 o (154 x 115 mm). iv, 599pp. Possibly a presentation binding: contemporary half red morocco gilt, spine gilt with small floral tools in compartments, lettered "Kendall's Texas Santa Fé Expedition," top edge gilt (rubbed). A one-volume edition of this classic account, with new Preface (by Falconer?) mentioning the annexation of Texas. A FINE PRESENTATION COPY FROM THOMAS FALCONER (1805-1882), inscribed on verso of title "Thomas Falconer one of the Adventurers on this expedition to John Jones Esq... 1855," and at end of Preface (p. iv): "The end was the capture of the City of Mexico & the possession of California by the government of the United States of America." On verso of last page, Falconer has listed his accomplishments. Falconer, an English attorney, interrupted his legal career to visit Texas; with Lamar's permission he joined the eventful Santa Fe expedition as a scientific observer. His own diary of the expedition was printed at New Orleans in 1842. For a copy of Falconer's On the Discovery of the Mississippi , see lot 227; for the First Edition, see lot 229.
