French text edition, letter-press general title (date erased) with advertisement on verso, 3 (of 5) engraved allegorical part-titles (those to Parts I and V signed by Jan van Luyken), and 138 double-page engraved maps, sea- and coastal charts, numerous woodcut coastal profiles and smaller detail charts in the text, leaf *2 bound before first part-title. (Lacking allegorical part-title, privilege and preface to Part II and allegorical part-title to Part IV, general title, *2, first part-title, and first 3 maps all remargined, laminated and varnished, and remargined, first part-title with some resultant loss to imprint, leaf B1 in Part 1 and last 6 text leaves and 5 maps with similar repairs, last 3 maps of Asia, the Americas and Ceylon laid down on light-blue paper with some loss, browning and spotting throughout.) Contemporary reversed calf (worn and scuffed, sometime repaired). Provenance : early illegible ink signatures and inscriptions to general title, one with heavy crossing out -- evidence of erasure of stamps -- a European royal collection. ALL FIVE PARTS OF THE ZEE-FAKKEL INCLUDING THE AMERICAN AND AFRICAN PORTIONS. This is a slightly later French issue preserving some early states of the original Dutch maps and an early state of the general title, which includes the name of Jan van Loon He was co-author of Part II, which deals mainly with French coasts and was naturally the earliest published section of the French translation. Koeman notes that after about 1690, van Loon's name no longer appears on the general title. Claas Janszoon Vooght wrote the rest of the text, and Koeman notes that it is possible that he was also the author of the charts (IV p.281).
