Beschreibung:

Kingdom of Macedon, Demetrios I Poliorketes AV Stater. Barbaric imitation (?) in the types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint after Pella, circa 294-293 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with coiled serpent / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟ[Υ] to right, monogram in outer left field. Cf. Newell 65; cf. HGC 3, 1005. 8.71g, 19mm, 11h. Good Very Fine. Scattered marks. Lustre around the devices. Extremely Rare. Struck in somewhat unusual style and in marked contrast to the refined classical beauty seen on the staters of Alexander III and other examples of this type, on the present piece the head of Athena has become an almost grotesque representation having a hooked nose and thick, snarling upper lip, features which suggest that this coin was not the product of an official mint of Demetrios' but produced locally to Pella in imitation. Very few staters of Demetrios in the types of Alexander III are known that were struck bearing his own name, making this possibly imitative example exceedingly rare and possibly unique.
