FIRST EDITION of this account of Gold Rush-era California. Kip provides excellent descriptions of San Francisco and Stockton as well as the mining camps. Although he left California unsuccessful and consequently had gloomy predictions for the state's future, his older brother, William Ingram Kip, went on to become a major figure there as the first Episcopalian Bishop of California in 1853.
