Title vignette, illustrations after J.L. Kipling. FIRST EDITION. Livingstone 116. Together 2 volumes, 8 o. Original blue cloth, gilt-decorated on front covers, gilt-lettered on spines, edges gilt (first volume with spine slightly cocked and inner hinges cracked, some very light wear, generally fine); two quarter morocco slipcases. [ Laid-in: ] KIPLING. Autograph postcard signed ("Rudyard Kipling"), The Elms, 22 October 1890?, to "Dear Leslie... No. I think you must be mistaken. I remember 'Ali Baba' perfectly-- even the drive... to see it acted--and I wrote one critique of it but I did not write any prologue. So far as I remember I did one for Roberts but that was years later. As you say, these were great days..." The recipient was possibly Leslie Cope Cornford (1867-1927), journalist, novelist and miscellaneous writer whose publications in Henley's National Observer attracted Kipling's attention. (2)
