Title: Kokugun Zenzu. (Ino Tadaka Atlas of Japan: Complete maps of Provinces & Counties [of Japan]) Author: Ao Tokei Motonobu Place: Nagoya Publisher: Eirakuya Toshiro Date: Vol 1: (1803?); Vol. 2 dated Tempo 8 (October 1837) Description: 2 volumes (complete). Vol. 1 with 41 double-page color woodblock maps of the 68 provinces preceded by a general map of Japan. Green title page inside front cover gives author, title & publisher. Vol. 2 with 34 double-page color woodblock maps. Together, 2 volumes.19.7x27.7 cm. (7¾x11"), yellow wrappers stitched with string. Rare and desirable atlas of Japan. Ino Tadataka surveyed Japan on foot for 17 years. The maps and atlases for which the master cartographer would be forever known were compiled by his friends and family and published approximately three years after his death. Atlases of this nature were compiled by orders of the Shogan Tokugawa and given to his favored warlords as gifts. As such, many were destroyed by fire and war and most of his works in existence, most which were collected in the late 1800's by an avid Ino collector, were destroyed by fire in 1912 in the Palace Royal Archives where they were stored, thus are very rare. Reference: Kerlen 928, p.397. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight insect damage, Vol. 2 lacks the wrapper label; very good. Item number: 244869
