9.625 x 7.625 in. photogravure mounted to 16 x 14 in.; 1912 copyright to Kolb Brothers in the negative; mount affixed with miniature 1913 monthly calendar at lower right and description of the scene at upper left, reading in full: "Hell's Half Mile" This section of Ladore Canyon received the title "Hell's Half Mile" when Major Powell and party were on their expedition through the Green and Colorado River Canyons in 1869-1872. This picture was made on Kolb Brothers photographic expedition through the same canyons, including Grand Canyon of Arizona. Their journey began at Green River City, Wyoming, and terminated at Needles, California. The time consumed was 101 days; the descent 6000 feet, principally in dangerous rapids, of which there were more than three hundred. Kolb Brothers accomplished two-thirds of their journey, each rowing in a separate boat, a third party joining them for the balance of the trip. Condition: Excellent condition.
