KRASHENINNIKOV, Stepan Petrovich (1713-1755). Opisanie zemli Kamtschatki. Beschreibung des Landes Kamtschatka. Lemgo: Meyer, 1766. The first German edition of the first description of Kamchatka, in contemporary boards. Krasheninnikov joined Bering's second expedition and was sent ahead to Kamchatka with Steller as his assistant; this work was compiled from both men's researches, and includes Steller’s pioneering account of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Krasheninnikov also describes the dialects, customs, morals, and religion of local tribes, with special emphasis on the power exercised by shamans. Translated by Johann Köhler from Grieve’s English translation of the 1755 original. Chavanne 5960; Howes K-265; Wickersham 5797; cf. Hill 948; cf. Lada-Mocarski 12; Sabin 38302. Quarto (233 x 190mm). Two engraved maps and five engraved plates, all folded and mounted on stubs (some spotting; title and some leaves browned).
