LANDSEER, Sir Edwin Henry. (1802 - 1873). Illustrated Autograph Letter, SIGNED, 1867. An Autograph letter, SIGNED, from the artist to his friend Edward Coleman referenced his painting of the Chillingham Castle (Northumberland) hunting, and other matters; 4pp., 55 lines, 8vo, (179 x 111mm) written in black ink manuscript on blue paper with Landseer's engraved antler letter-heading forming the basis of a drawing of a stag, his St. John's Wood (London) address printed in red, dated Sep. 10, 1867, the letter taped on two corners to a sheet of thick white paper, captioned in black ink beneath, (387 x 283mm) overall. Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was an English painter and sculptor, known particularly for his paintings of horses, dogs, and stags. Edward John Coleman (1834-1885) was a broker on the Stock Exchange and owner of a coalmining business. Coleman retired at the age of 29 and purchased the estate Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire from Lord Taunton in 1863. He beautifully furnished the ground floor of the house as a studio where Landseer painted many of his works, two of his 1867 works entitled 'The Wild Cattle of Chillingham' and 'Deer in Chillingham Park', were commissioned to be displayed in a chamber at Chillingham Castle, the seat of the Earl of Tankerville.
