Title: Large archive of "clipsheet" summations of letters to William Randolph Hearst Author: Hearst, William Randolph Place: No Place Publisher: Date: [c. 1928] Description: Large archive of several hundred typewritten pages containing summations of thousands of letters written to William Randolph Hearst. A remarkable archive of Hearst's "clipsheet" system of doing business covering topics including the operations of his various newspapers; offers of items for sale including art, antiques, real estate, etc.; autograph requests; family matters; and much, much more. The "clipsheet" process of doing business was described colorfully in the October 1935 Fortune Magazine: "If you are William Randolph Hearst you have not time to read all your morning telegrams, let alone your morning mail. So your supersecretary, a priceless person named Joseph Willicombe reads it for you, selects the `important' 10% and squashes each neatly phrased message into a blunt headline...Wherever you may be...you make perhaps fifteen decisions in a minute, scribbling a few words from which Joe Willicombe will write the orders of the day..." [While it is possible that these summaries were prepared by Willicombe, a note on an accompanying file folder attributes them to George W. Helm.] Lot Amendments Condition: Paper brittle and browned, some chipping at edges; overall very good. Item number: 190620
