a large 5" x 8" albumen of Civil War Captain James A. Sexton, 72nd Illinois, the Chicago Board of Trade Regiment in original 1860s mahogany frame with Chicago label. The identification is oral but substantiated by post-war images of Sexton who in addition to becoming a successful industrialist, was Chicago's Postmaster, Colonel in the Illinois National Guard, Illinois State GAR Commander and National GAR commander in 1898. During the Civil War Sexton first served in the 3-month 67th Illinois and joined the 72nd Illinois in September 1862 as Captain and served in every battle the regiment was engaged. Sexton was wounded three times, at Franklin, Nashville and Spanish Fort, and commanded the regiment in the two former battles. Post-war, Sexton founded the famous Chicago stove manufacturers of Cribben, Sexton & Co., which later became the Universal Stove Company. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1898. Along with the Sexton albumen is a second large framed image, ca 1930s, of Sexton's grandson-Frankin S. Caltin-an Illinois State Representative. The official portrait is captioned on the matte: Thirty-First Senatorial District--48th General Assembly/Senator Willett H. Cromwell, Representatives Franklin S. Catlin and Harry L. Shaver, Speaker William McKinley Condition: Sexton albumen near EXC with veneer damge to frame; ditto the political view.
