Minerva Mine, Hardin County, Illinois A shockingly colorful fluorite crystal of great size, having exceptional luster and saturation of color. Yellow is the rarest of colors in minerals and in fluorite it is unusual to see one so large and translucent. The yellow core which is visible is surrounded by a thin layer of golden chalcopyrite crystals on its surface, which are further covered by a layer of blue fluorite forming a deep blue rim. The Minerva Mines are now long closed and the supply of specimens of Illinois fluorite, so long a staple of any American mineral collection, has all but disappeared from the market. This specimen is stated to have come from the important collections of Keith Proctor. Measuring 5 x 4 ½ x 3 in.
