Beschreibung:

Lot of 4 full sets of Special Orders from 1872, 1873, 1875 and 1880 from the Adjutant General's office. The 1875 volume also includes the full set of Special Orders from Army Headquarters, many of which are signed. A full description follows: War Department, Adjutant General's Office. Special Orders, 1872, Nos. 1-350 [All Published] Washington, 1872. 4to, custom half morocco over marbled paper, complete in 350 parts. The complete set of Special Orders for the year 1872. These were custom bound for the Library of Congress, with the LOC bookplate on front pastedown, and acquired through a LOC surplus auction. Very scarce. With much material on the Indian Wars. Some orders with notes in margins, suggesting that they were used internally, though we cannot verify the handwriting. Near fine overall with some light wear, and assuming the internal marks offer some historical value. War Department, Adjutant General's Office. Special Orders, 1873, Nos. 1-255 [All Published][With Two Signed Orders] Washington, 1873. Large 8vo, 62 p. index plus 255 orders bound continuously. The final order signed by E.D. Townsend. A very scarce complete set of special orders, bound continuously for the Library of Congress and indexed, and sold via a LOC surplus auction. With much material on the Indian Wars. Special Order no. 155 regards a reimbursement to George Armstrong Custer for expenses. Numbers 242 and 255 are signed by E.D. Townsend. A near fine copy with minimal wear, quite well preserved. War Deparment. Adjutant General’s Office and General Headquarters. Bacon, John M.; McDowell, Alexander McCook; Whipple, William War Department, Adjutant General’s Office Special Orders 1-265 for 1875; [with] Headquarters Army of the United States, Special Orders 1-74 for 1874. The entire set of Special Orders for 1875, bound continuously. The Headquarters’ Special Orders show multiple signatures of Bacon, McDowell and McCook, who were all working under General Sherman at the time. Many Special Orders bear the signature of a Major Benjamin on the bottom. War Department, Adjutant General’s Office. Special Orders 1-278 [All Published] Special Orders Issued from the Adjutant General's Office, 1880. Washington, 1880. Large 8vo, half morocco over marbled boards, 59 pp. plus 278 orders (all published). The complete set of Special Orders issued by the Adjutant General's office. This copy bound by the Library of Congress and later sold at a surplus auction, with marginal notes in a clerical hand, probably for index purposes, and noting the provenance of each order (most of which were duplicate copies from Major Benjamin. Quite scarce. With much material on Indian Wars. A near fine copy besides the noted marks, with some orders creased. Most likely purchased at a LOC surplus auction in the 1970s or 1980s by the bookseller Clare Van Norman, and in turn, acquired by the consignor.
