LATIN MANUSCRIPT - Liturgical Psalter. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Netherlands, late 15th century] 125 x 90 mm. iv + 130 + ii leaves, COMPLETE, collation: 1 8 2 1 3 1 a-p 8 . Traces of signatures (letters and numbers) in lower right corners of recto pages in the first half of each quire. 23 lines written in brown ink in a gothic hybrida bookhand between 24 horizontal and 2 vertical lines ruled in lead, justification: 80 x 57 mm., occasional flourishes to ascenders of first lines and descenders of last lines of pages, rubrics in red giving the Psalm numbers and liturgical designations, one-line versal initials and two-line Psalm initials in alternating red and blue Lombards, 20 three- or four-line blue divided Lombards with red pen-flourishing marking liturgical divisions, one ten-line initial B (f. 11r) in blue with white pen-work decoration on a shaped burnished gold ground with red and pink acanthus infilling, three-quarter border of pink, blue and green acanthus on a red-orange ground stippled in white, one full-page miniature (f. 10v) of King David kneeling in prayer in an interior, his throne behind him, an open book on a table before him, his harp beside him, three-quarter border of pink and blue acanthus leaves on a dark green ground stippled in white, in the lower margin a coat-of-arms, (marginal dampstain to last ca. 10 leaves.) Contemporary blind-tooled leather over wooden boards, remains of two brass clasps (worn, rebacked retaining original backstrip, discreet repairs to corners). TEXT Contents: Calendar, including Saints Gertrude (March 17), Odulph (June 12, red), Lebuin (June 25 and Nov. 12, red), and Willibrord (Nov. 7, red) (ff. 1r-9r, ff. 9v-10r blank); miniature (f. 10v); Psalms (ff. 11r-117v); Canticles (ff. 118r-127r); Litany (Lebuin and Odulph last among the confessors, Gertrude among the virgins) and preces (ff. 127v-130v). The manuscript was probably made in the Northern Netherlands for use there. Odulph and Lebuin, who are featured in the calendar and litany, were Frisian saints. The style of the initial B, and in particular the patterns of pen-flourishing, resemble those of manuscripts from Groningen and its vicinity (cf. J.M.M. Hermans, Middeleeuwse handschriften uit Groningse kloosters , Groningen 1988; A.S. Korteweg et al., Kriezels, aubergines en takkenbossen , Zutphen 1992, pp. 149-45). PROVENANCE Unidentified coat of arms in border of miniature on f.10v; Van Bronchorst family (Hans Changer Bronchorst, signature dated 1549, f. ii r ; partially erased signature, f.1r; records of 16th-century births and deaths on ff. ii v -iii r ); Six van Hillegom (18th-century engraved armorial bookplate).
