Lauterbur (1929-2007), American chemist, whose work on C 13 NMR spectroscopy led to his invention of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This pioneering discovery is now regarded as one of the most important medical diagnostic advances of the twentieth century and in recognition Lauterbur was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
