Frieda makes two pounds of butter each week! ... Black-Eyed Susan, the cow, escaped through the fences again'. Of a member of the family in Germany, Lawrence asks 'is she really going round in knee-length skirts? I am the Moses of the family, and mean to scold her'. But his thoughts turn on the contrast between Europe and his present surroundings: 'Here it is too dry. The wild strawberries are dried out before they ripen, and my field turns to dust. I am a little homesick for Europe. Still, this life is very healthy, and I am really much stronger. But I would have loved to have seen the English meadows, before they are mown, and eaten cherries in Germany, and grapes in Italy. I don't think we will come back again to America next year'. Lawrence's sister has built a big new house: 'Thank God I don't have a big new house ... One can no longer say "I am a stranger everywhere, yet everywhere I am at home"'.
