Original pictorial publisher's cloth gilt (head and tail of spine bumped, head of spine a little chipped, corners rubbed). 'MY BIKE DOES 96 AND GOES ON FOR AS LONG AS MY STRENGTH LASTS'. An indication of his childhood love of Sewell's classic novel ('"Black Beauty" has stood the test of time well; my mother brought us all up on it!'), Lawrence's inscription also shows his passion for motorbikes: one that was to claim his life barely a year later: 'Unfortunately I went off on machines ... machinery is an extension of our faculties, whereas animals become our friends -- or enemies! Also they teach us our place ... beside them'. Lawrence joined the RAF in March 1923, and from 1929 to 1935 worked on the development of seaplane tenders and air-sea rescue craft. In March 1934 he visited the Cheshire town of Northwich to oversee the construction of an RAF Auxiliary vessel, the 'Aquarius', at the shipbuilders, Yarwood & Sons. The 'S.M.Y.' to whom the book is inscribed may be the third of those 'sons', Sydney Yarwood (1886-1969). Lawrence left the RAF in early 1935, and in May of that year had a fatal accident while riding his beloved Brough Superior motorbike near his Dorset home.
