Significant to Mormon history in that six of the laws passed deal specifically with the "Hancock Disturbances," i.e. the troubles between the Mormon residents of Nauvoo and the gentiles living in the surrounding countryside, which resulted in open fighting involving the Nauvoo Legion led by a pro-Mormon sherrif. Joseph and Hyrum Smith were imprisoned and then killed by a mob, Nauvoo was sacked, and the Mormons agreed to vacate Illinois, most of them departing in May and June, 1846. Among the six pertinent laws in the present volume are "An Act to Pay Certain Persons the Balance Due them from the State" which contains "A List showing the pay, the amount received, and the amount due the persons therein named, called into service by the governor, to suppress the Hancock disturbances" (pp.33-34); "An Act to compensate Porter Sergant for powder furnished in the Hancock war" (p.36); "An Act authorizing the removal of the county seat of Hancock county" (p.56); "An Act for the relief [of] certain persons therein named," the persons being "Thomas H. Owen, for the sum of fifty-one dollars and thirty-four cents, in full, for provisions furnished the troops employed by the government in the Mormon war. Also, to Thomas Wells, five dollars, in full, for provisions furnished by him to the troops aforesaid" (pp.118-119); "An Act to provide for the sale of lands and town lots in township four north, range nine west, in Hancock County" (p.181); and in the appendix containing the auditor's report, p.viii, various expenditures relating to the disturbances at Nauvoo.
