Paris, Jean Anisson, 1696 2 vols. in 8vo, 161x98 mm; contemporary full calf binding, gilt titles and ornaments on the back; gilt coat of arms of the Larochefoucauld family within oval on the plates. Red sprinkled edges. Pp. [28], 508; [4], 536. In the first volume a chalcography frontispiece with the portrait of Cam-Hy, emperor of China and eastern Tartary. A total of 20 plates engraved in copper o.t., of which 2 folded and 1 folded typographic table. A stanp of extinct library \'Chateau de la Roche Guyon Biblioteque\' on both titlepages. Fine specimen.
First rare edition. The author was one of the six Jesuits sent to China by the Academie des Sciences and by Louis XIV, in order to promote French interests and evaluate the state of Chinese scientific learning. The work shows a detailed description of the Beijing observatory and numerous astronomical instruments, such as the astrolabes, illustrated here and installed there by Father Ferdinand Verbiest.The work is embellished by the blind tooling on the plates of the gilt coat of arms of the Larochefoucauld family.Cordier, Sinica 39; Western Travellers in China 30.
