FINELY DECORATED BINDING COMMISSIONED BY LE PETIT FROM THE BROTHERS MARCELLIN AND PAUL LORTIC: gold-tooled light-blue crushed morocco, over thick pasteboard, shaped border of ten parallel fillets on sides, leafy branch in the corners, spine with five raised bands, triple fillets and lettering, roll-tooled borders on turn-ins, signed Lortic Frères, gilt edges, original gilt-printed vellum wrappers preserved, (top of front joint slightly cracked). Cloth slipcase. Provenance : the author's wife (printed ad personam : "Exemplaire unique imprimé pour Madame Le Petit" -- Claude Guérin (anonymous sale, Drouot 7 December 1990, lot 113). UNIQUE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION PRINTED ON VELLUM FOR MADAME JULES LE PETIT. The paper issues included 10 copies on Holland, 40 on Japan and 60 on Whatman. FIRST EDITION, which was reprinted more than fifty years later by Les Bibliolâtres de France. In his chapter on modern binders the author highly praises Lortic and his sons, whom he would commission to bind this exemplaire de tête .
