David and large unsigned historiated initial N on a1r, large engraved historiated tailpiece on e4v, large engraved headpiece view of Le Tellier's library, with his arms and putti fetching books on A1r and a large historiated initial, both by Sébastien Leclerc [M. Préaud, No. 1497 & 1498]. Contemporary vellum, front cover with gilt arms of the city of Regensburg surmounted by a double-headed eagle (oxidized and somewhat faded, minor soiling). Le Tellier, Archbishop of Reims, was the son of the Chancellor of France; his vast fortune enabled him to indulge fully his passion for books which he acquired on numerous travels all over Europe: "the Telleriana... is one of the best and most important seventeenth century catalogues... he offered scholars a large, well-classified, and attractively printed collection of theology, law, and history ... the Telleriana has survived to our own time and is now in the Bibliothèque Ste. Geneviève' (Taylor, p. 6/7 who refers to it no less than twenty times in his work, but who erroneously states that many of the books were acquired at Card. Sluse's sale in Rome in 1690: most of that library was acquired by Card. Imperiali, the manuscripts by the Vaticana; nor was Le Tellier a cardinal). Le Tellier's library, which contained some 16,000 volumes, comprised many books from the library of his teacher, Antoine Faure, Chancellor of Reims, which he had left him on his death in 1689. Le Tellier was at times in charge of the Bibliothèque Royale and eventually presented his manuscripts to that library. The authorship of the catalogue has repeatedly been attributed to Claude Clément, but is actually attributable to Le Tellier's librarian, Philippe Dubois Breslauer and Folter 89; Pollard and Ehrman table XXXI; Taylor, p.6, etc.
