ca 1835-1845. Highly-polished black jacked leather hat with large die-struck brass half-sunburst hat plate. Upper front with a black leather rosette cockade. Chinstrap consists of a gold bullion intertwined thread connected on both sides of hat by two brass crest-shaped shields both with an eagle in center with a patriotic shield. Both top and bottom of hat complete with two brass bands encircling the hat. Top of hat complete with white swan feathered plume. Two brass rings on each side of top portion of the hat. Interior with black leather stitched sweatband. Original hat label affixed to inside top of hat with engraving of a soldier astride a horse that reads Burr & Shaw No. 12 Westminster, and 17 Cove Streets, Providence, R.I. Manufacturers of Military Caps and Equipment Generally. Edward Burr and Bradford C. Shaw. Overall height 13". For a similar example please see To Arms p.114 Sotheby's 1/19/2003.
