Six illuminated manuscript leaves on vellum (each approximately 168 x 117mm), French ca.1470, with fully inhabited swirling borders in colors and burnished gold featuring birds, butterflies and bees, acanthus foliage, strawberries, pomagranates, pansies, carnations, sweet peas, and morning glories as well as burnished gold ivy leaves and nuts, the whole framing arch-topped illuminated miniatures. The presence of strawberries in the illuminations suggest that these were executed by a Benedictine. Framed and mounted together. The illuminations depict the following scenes: 1. The Arrest of Christ, depicting Christ kneeling in prayer with three apostles in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Temple Guards of Sanhedren at the gate. 2. The Flagellation of Christ, with Christ tied to a pillar and being beaten by three men, Pontius Pilate and two others looking on. 3. The Mocking of Christ, Christ wearing a purple robe and crown of thorns, a black hound at his feet, three soldiers beating him with staffs and one kneeling at his feet in mock fealty. 4. The Judgement of Christ, Christ bound at the wrists before Pontius Pilate, Pilate seated at a throne with servants washing his hands. 5. Christ Carrying the Cross, a soldier beating him with a club, the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist looking on and praying in the background, a black puppy at Christ's feet. 6. The Entombment of Christ, the body of Christ surrounded by St. John the Evangelist and the three Marys (Magdalene, the Virgin, and Mary Salome), Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathaea wrapping Christ's body in linen.
