LEDGER BINDING.] Italian ledger binding of blind-tooled calf, dated 1663 on the front cover, reinforced with characteristic two strips of leather passing horizontally across the back and partially over each side, fastened to the surface by ornamentally interlaced hide stitching, front cover with intersecting quadruple fillets and scrolling leaves, back cover with a floral border surrounding a central panel of intersecting quadruple fillets, wide pointed flap decorated with floral tools and with hide lace (a few old repairs). Containing several hundred blank sheets, with manuscript thumb index at front. Provenance : La Bougie (signature on flyleaf dated 12 May 1698); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 2 January 1959.
