LEE, Robert E., General, C.S.A. Carte-de-visite photograph inscribed and signed on verso, "For Miss Annie W. Paul, R E Lee," imprint on back of "Vannerson & Davis, Photographic Artists, No.77 Main Street, Richmond," [Va.]. [post 1864]. 100 x 62mm, including gold-ruled card mount, 2-cent U.S. Internal Revenue stamp, two tiny rust spots at lower left margin, otherwise in excellent condition. A well-known view of Lee from chest up, in uniform, his coat buttons and insignia of rank on collar clearly visible. The photograph, presented to an admirer only five months after the end of the war, was taken in Richmond by J.W. Davies in 1864. It was retouched to eliminate a dangling end of Lee's necktie and in that version was "a favorite with the General and Mrs. Lee; they gave away many autographed copies to solicitous admirers" (Meredith, p.50). Paul, Lexington, [Va.], 30 September 1865. 1 page, 8vo, slight separation along one fold. "My dear Miss Annie, I am very much obliged to you for your letter...& shall prize the bookmark for your sake. I send according to your request my photograph, which I beg you will accept.
