Beschreibung:

CDV of a seated Lieutenant Huidekoper by Bowdoin, Taylor & Co. of Alexandria, Virginia. John Huidekoper (ca 1833-1883), a native Dutchman residing in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, enlisted as a sergeant in Co. C, 34th Pennsylvania Volunteers, on June 21, 1861. He was discharged for a promotion to second lieutenant of the 150th Pennsylvania on October 30, 1862, from which he was assigned to various other assignments employing his background as a topographical engineer before his mustering out in Baltimore March 20, 1865. Among these was a stint as topographical officer for Major General Abner Doubleday, the supposed inventor of baseball, and special aide-de-camp to Brigadier General John R. Kenly. A history of the 150th Pennsylvania states that he was given the nickname "Shacks" due to his Dutch accent interfering with his pronunciation of the name "Jack." Condition: Very good condition.
