Title: Life in the Far West Author: Ruxton, George Frederic Place: New York Publisher: Harper & Bros. Date: 1849 Description: 235 + 4 ad pp. 7¼x5, original dark blue cloth stamped in blind, gilt spine title. First U.S. Edition. Originally published in Blackwood's Magazine June-November, 1848. "After his years in the Rocky Mountain West, Ruxton returned to England, where he published his Adventures in Mexico and the Rocky Mountains. Of particular interest in Life in the Far West is an account of the Walker expedition of trappers to California, which Ruxton may have heard from Mark Head, probably one of the independent trappers accompanying Zenas Leonard. Camp considers the story `somewhat fanciful'" - W-C. Wagner-Camp lists this as the first edition, although Howes gives that distinction to the Edinburgh edition of the same year. Cowan p.546; Howes R554; Wagner-Camp 173:1. Lot Amendments Condition: Nick to spine head; contemporary bookplate to front pastedown; scattered foxing, else very good. Item number: 170686
