The last and longest running of the Lillywhites which incorporates John Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Companion from 1885 onwards. 1872 is the third issue of the first edition, and 1873 with errata slip the second issue of the second edition. Unlike its predecessors, the annual contains ‘a veritable treasure trove of illustrations’ (West, Guide to James Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Annual , 1993, p. 29), with two wood-engraved portraits in both 1874 and 1875, and a mounted photographic frontispiece from 1876 to 1900. Allen 57; Padwick 1087. Together with a presentation copy of West's Guide (New Moreton Press, Oxon, 1993), signed by the author and inscribed 'For Roger T. Hancock in gratitude for his assistance'.
