LIN FENGMIAN (1900-1991) DAHLIAS Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on paper 69.5 x 69 cm. (27 1/3 x 27 in.) Signed, with one seal of the artist Dated 1977 Dedicated to Jingtao and Luming Note: When Lin was discharged for his post as Headmaster of the Hangzhou School of Art in 1950, he returned to live in Shanghai at 53 Nanchang Road. The two storey house was share by Lin and his downstairs neighbour, Gu Jingtao. During the Cultural Revolution, Lin was arrested and jailed for five years. During this time, Gu Jingtao did not forget their friendship and took risky trips to visit the incarcerated Lin. Lin was finally allowed to leave China in the summer of 1977 to visit his family. On the eve of his departure, Lin painted this piece and gave it to Gu Jingtao as gift, for Gu's wedding, and also as parting momento. Reflecting Lin's exuberant mood on regaining his freedom, the vibrant colours used in this painting speak of joy and hope.
