COUNTER-SIGNED AFTER LINCOLN'S DEATH BY ANDREW JOHNSON ("Andrew Johnson"), n.d. 1 page, oblong (1¾ x 3½in.), hinged to a matt, with an engraving of Lincoln (Johnson's signature pale) .

COUNTER-SIGNED AFTER LINCOLN'S DEATH BY ANDREW JOHNSON ("Andrew Johnson"), n.d. 1 page, oblong (1¾ x 3½in.), hinged to a matt, with an engraving of Lincoln (Johnson's signature pale) . JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE HIS ASSASSINATION, LINCOLN GRANTS PAROLES TO CONFEDERATES: "Let these men be released on taking the oath of Dec. 8, 1863." After John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Lincoln at Ford's Theater on the night of 14 April, the new President Andrew Johnson, counter-signed the numerous documents that lay on Lincoln's desk, awaiting action or implementation, to demonstrate the continuity between the will of the slain President and his successor.
