After John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Lincoln at Ford's Theater on the night of 14 April, the new President Andrew Johnson, counter-signed the numerous documents that lay on Lincoln's desk, awaiting action or implementation, to demonstrate the continuity between the will of the slain President and his successor.
