Eliot (1808-1870). 1 page, 4to, additionally endorsed by Chauncey McKeever as Asst. Adj. Genl. . LINCOLN ENDORSES THE CAUSE OF AN ITALIAN IMMIGRANT IN THE UNION ARMY. Massachusetts Congressman Thomas D. Eliot asks Lincoln to make Colonel A. C. Maggi of the 33rd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers a brigadier general, praising Maggi "as an honest, thorough and accomplished soldier" who has had "large personal experience in the field," and whose "military education has been complete." Lincoln's endorsement in response reads, "Submitted to the Sec. of War." Alberto C. Maggi (1824-1880) was an Italian immigrant who enlisted as a 90-day volunteer on 23 April 1861. He stayed on and rose to the rank of full colonel by June 1862. But he did not receive the promotion requested here. He resigned his commission in April 1863.
