A number of the orders signed by Assistant Adjutant General E. D. Townsend; some larger Navy circulars folded to fit; occasional staining and creasing. Contemporary calf over marbled boards, pink endpapers, marbled edges (Navy Department similarly, but not absolutely uniformly bound); edges and spines quite rubbed, hinges cracking. The volumes comprise, 1: General Orders 1–111 (18 January–30 December 1861); 2–3: Index of General Orders, Adjutant General's Office. 1862. Washington: Government Printing Office,1863, General Orders 1–217 (6 January to 30 December 1862); 4–5: General Orders 1–300 (2 January 1863–5 September 1863); and the volume of Navy Department Orders and other publications, mostly over the name of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. These volumes contain two significant printings of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: the Adjutant General's General Order No. 1 of 2 January 1863 is the first War Department printing (Eberstadt, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation 12; Grolier/American 71; Streeter sale 3:1751) and Secretary Welles's General Order No. 4 of 14 January 1863 is the very rare first Navy Department printing (Eberstadt 13).
