LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President . Autograph endorsement signed ("A.Lincoln"), four lines plus signature and date-line on a small oblong cut from a larger document, [Washington, D.C.], 13 February 1865. 1 page, oblong, 53 x 78mm (2 1/16 x 3 1/16 in.), backed, edges lightly browned. The day after his last birthday, the President allows a young soldier to leave the Union army: "Let this boy be discharged on refunding any bounty received. A. Lincoln." From 1861 the government offered bounties ranging from $100 for conscripts and substitutes to $400 for five-year volunteers. Total state and Federal bounty payments during the War have been estimated as high as $750,000,000.
