The day after his last birthday, the President allows a young soldier to leave the Union army: "Let this boy be discharged on refunding any bounty received. A. Lincoln." From 1861 the government offered bounties ranging from $100 for conscripts and substitutes to $400 for five-year volunteers. Total state and Federal bounty payments during the War have been estimated as high as $750,000,000.
