Autograph letter signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, to VICE-PRESIDENT HANNIBAL HAMLIN, with his signature added, Washington, D.C., 31 March 1864. 1 page, 8vo, SIGNED AT BOTTOM BY HAMLIN "YOURS TRULY, H. HAMLIN," tipped to larger sheet. Fine. LINCOLN TO VICE-PRESIDENT HAMLIN A previously unpublished letter from Lincoln to his first Vice- President, inscribed and signed by the Vice-President, perhaps as a gift. A brief reply from the President in response to a letter from Hamlin: "Yours of this date is received, and the subject of it shall be attended to." Below, Hamlin has written: "Your truly H. Hamlin." Hamlin (1809-1881), from the state of Maine, had entered politics as a Democrat, but left the party over the slavery issue to join the Republican party. As Senator from 1848-1861 he was briefly the first Republican governor of Maine before becoming Vice-President; after a single term he retired, but returned to the Senate in 1869. A rare conjuction of President and Vice-President. Collected Works , ed. Basler and the Supplements records roughly 20 letters from President Lincoln to the Vice-President; nearly all of these reside in permanent institutional collections. Only a single Lincoln to Hamlin letter has appeared at auction since 1975, according to ABPC: an 1860 ALS, from the Sang collection ($5500). We are unaware of another ALS jointly signed by the President and Vice-President.
