(2 x 3 in.), probably cut from a larger sheet . LINCOLN URGES THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY TO SEE "ONE OF OUR BEST FRIENDS" A brief note (six lines plus signature and date-line) regarding a communication the President wishes to forward to the Secretary of the Treasury: "In addition to what is within said, I know Mr. Scovel to be one of our best friends, Will the Sec. of Treasury please see him?" It is likely that the "within" was some sort of letter of recommendation for Mr. Scovel (probably James M. Scovel of Camden, New Jersey), who may have been applying to the Treasury Dept. either for a position, or, more likely, permission to engage in trade in cotton. Published in Collected Works , ed. R.P. Basler, 8:113 (then in the collection of Oliver P. Barrett).
