LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President . Letter signed ("A. Lincoln" AS PRESIDENT-ELECT, the letter in the hand of his Secretary John G. Nicolay, to Sarah Ann Skillman [of Roslyn, New York], Springfield, Illinois, 31 January 1861. One page, 8vo, clean one-inch tear along fold, verso with evidence of mounting, but otherwise in good condition. The President-elect, preparing to depart on his trip to Washington, complies with a request from an autograph collector, perhaps one of the earliest such solicitations he received: "Dear Miss (or Madam?), Herewith I send you my autograph, which you request. Yours truly..." Mary Lincoln and Robert Todd had returned by train from the East a few days before, on the 25th. Since the beginning of the new year the President-elect had been extremely busy. He weighed cabinet appointments, conferred with Senators, Congressmen and others who came to Springfield, worked to settle his affairs in Springfield, wrote his inaugural address and planned the complicated route he would take from Springfield to Washington. In the meantime, he closely followed the sobering news of the secession movements in the southern states and reports of the blockade of Fort Sumter. John G. Nicolay (1832-190l) had known Lincoln for some years and became Lincoln's private secretary upon Lincoln's nomination for President. "Few men, indeed, were as close to Lincoln...or so fully enjoyed his confidence...." (DAB). On the day this letter is dated by Nicolay, the President-elect was in Charleston and Coles County, Illinois, visiting his step-mother and viewing his father's grave (see Lincoln Day by Day , ed. E.S. Meirs). He returned to Springfield on February 1, and may in fact have signed this letter on that date. On the 6th, the Lincolns held an elaborate farewell reception at their home. At 8:00 a.m. on the 11th Lincoln boarded a train at the Springfield depot for his circuitous journey to Washington and the inauguration. Provenance : 1. Sarah Ann Skillman, the recipient, a young woman residing in Roslyn, Long Island, New York 2 The present owner, by descent.
