LINCOLN COUNTY WARS.This lot features a collection of 62 individual bonds, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents issued on behalf of the Lincoln County Sheriff's office from 1872-1882, the bulk of them dating from 1881, many signed secretarially on behalf of Pat Garrett by deputies such as J.S. REDMAN, J.S. LEA, J.W. PHILLIPS, WILLIAM GOODELL and JOHN KINNEY. They cover a wide range of legal issues, including gambling, cattle rustling, assault and even murder. Most are partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, on Territory forms. Highlights include: 1. Three documents pertaining to the case of Territory v. H.H. Harvey for permitting gaming, including an appearance bond for Harvey dated August 17, 1881, signed by JAMES DOLAN and SHERIFF WILLIAM BRADY. Dolan was the cattle baron whose feud with rival Tunstall sparked the Lincoln County Wars. Sheriff William Brady was murdered in an ambush in 1878 by Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Regulators. 2. A subpoena for Alexander McSween and Joseph Howard to appear in the case of Territory v. James Riley, August 22, 1876, signed by Sheriff SATURINO BACA. Alexander McSween was John Tunstall's business partner. 3. An arrest warrant for James Redman for "assault with intent to kill," November 16, 1880 and signed by Sheriff GEORGE KIMBRELL. Redman would later serve as a deputy of Pat Garrett; Kimbrell was a Pony Express rider before arriving in Lincoln County. 4. A subpoena for Buck Powell (a Seven Rivers warrior) and John Wallace Olinger (brother of Pecos Bob Olinger who was killed by Billy the Kid) in the case of Territory v. James Jones et al., May 23, 1881, signed secretarially by Pat Garrett. 5. A group of 11 documents related to 1875 trial of Territory of New Mexico v. William Wilson including documents signed by Sheriffs WILLIAM BRADY and SATURINO BACA. Wilson was convicted of killing Robert Case, a rival of Murphy-Dolan. Wilson was convicted and hung twice on the same day: he was hung the first time, taken down and buried in a coffin. When they realized he was still alive, they took him out and hung him again for 20 minutes, according to contemporary newspaper reports. 6. 3 documents, 1879, 1880, and 1881, signed by JOSEPH H. BLAZER, foreman of the Grand Jury. Blazer was the owner of Blazer's Mill, the site of a major battle in the Lincoln County Wars. 7. A Manuscript Document of JOHN B. WILSON as Justice of the Peace, 1882. Wilson deputized Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Regulators. 8. An arrest warrant for "Anderson" issued January 13, 1991, inscribed (secretarially) by Pat Garrett: "Followed Anderson to the State Line of Texas, a distance of 430 miles but was unable to serve within warrant. By Pat F. Garrett ... / Kinney Deputy Sherriff / July 24, 1881." Possibly an arrest warrant for D.L. "Doc" Anderson, a.k.a. Billy Wilson, an associate of Billy the Kid. 9. A manuscript document of District Attorney WILLIAM RYERSON, 1875, charging John Riley with stealing cattle from Alexander McSween. Plus many more. A detailed listing of the contents of this lot is available upon request. Saleroom noticesPlease note this lot has been withdrawn.
