LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). Autograph letter of condolence to Maurice Sand Baron Dudevant, n.p., n.d. [ circa June 1876], on the death of his mother George Sand (Lucile Aurore Amantine Dupin), written on the verso of the announcement of her death on 8 June 1876, black ink, 1 page, 262 x 195mm., (the edges frayed, some staining). Liszt writes a glowing tribute to George Sand (1804-1876), who holds a unique position in nineteenth century literature, Le génie de George Sand charme et captive le monde . He goes on to recall that her first met Baron Dudevant at his mother's chateau of Nohant in 1837. Liszt first met Sand herself in Paris in October 1834 when he was introduced to her by Alfred de Musset At that time, Liszt was establishing himself in Paris and forging friendships with numerous writers and musicians, including Chopin, Rossini and Paganini. However, after the visit to Nohant, Liszt and Sand broke with each other and despite Liszt's attempts to repair the friendship, their former intimacy never returned. Liszt last wrote to Sand in 1845, a letter to which she never replied.
