Beschreibung:

LITTLETON, Edward (b. 1626)]. The Groans of the Plantations: Or, A True Account of Their Grievous and Extreme Sufferings by the Heavy Impositions Upon Sugar, and other Hardships. Relating More Particularly to the Island of Barbados. London: M. Clark, 1689.
LITTLETON, Edward (b. 1626)]. The Groans of the Plantations: Or, A True Account of Their Grievous and Extreme Sufferings by the Heavy Impositions Upon Sugar, and other Hardships. Relating More Particularly to the Island of Barbados. London: M. Clark, 1689. 4 o (208 x 162mm). [2], 35pp. (Title soil and spotted, small tear in blank portion, damage at upper gutter, a few headlines just shaved). Modern mottled calf in blind-ruled period style, red morocco spine label, edges sprinkled red (minor rubbing). One of the earliest objections to taxation without representation to arise from the British colonies. Littleton went to Barbadoes in 1666 as secretary to the King's attorney there. On returning he acted as the island's agent. Here, he vehemently protests a new, increased customs duty on sugar, even though the existing tax "did fleece us." The pamphlet spells out "the cruel methods, and by what fatal degrees, the once flourishing English colonies have been brought to ruin." Bell, vol III, 82; Kress 1700; Sabin 3271; Wing L2577.
