LIVES OF THE SAINTS: PRAXEDES AND APPOLLINARIS, in Latin, written in BENEVENTAN MINUSCULE, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [southern Italy, 11th/12th century] 555 x 372mm. A complete leaf, two columns of 37 lines written in black ink in a fine, regular Beneventan minuscule, ruled in blind, justification: 420 x 270mm, capitals touched red, TWO LARGE INTERLACED DRAGON INITIALS, V ( Virgo venerabilis praxedis habitabat in urbe roma ), on recto, with ribbons of yellow and red terminating in grimacing beast-heads of blue and green and with a central creature twisting round to bite its own back, I ( in diebus claudii cesars venit petrus ap[osto]l[i]s] , on verso, with ribbons of the same colours and beasts extending into the central margin, SMALL ENTWINED DRAGONS INITIAL, the leaf once used as a wrapper with the verso as the outer side and with 16th-century title written in outer margin, a few threads from sewing of spine (small holes in folds, creases in upper third, the verso darkened and worn over folds and creases, a few spots). A VAST AND COMPLETE FOLIO WRITTEN IN BENEVENTAN MINUSCULE the pre-Caroline script that originated in southern Italy in the eighth century and that is often considered to have reached its peak in the eleventh century. In his discussion of Beneventan manuscripts E. A. Lowe cited as noteworthy for their size only one larger than the present leaf (a Lectionary in the Vatican Library, Vat. lat.4222) and one other, also a Saints' Lives, of similar size to the present leaf (Vat. lat.7810): The Beneventan Script (Oxford 1914), p.288. The text on the recto opens with the end of the Life of St Symphorosa and her seven sons (B.H.L. 7971), followed by the Life of St Praxedis (B.H.L. 6920) concluding on the verso and followed by the Passion of St Apollinaris (B.H.L. 623). At the end of the 16th century the folio was used as a wrapper for a register in a convent in Penne. This leaf is included in the following listings of Beneventan manuscripts: V. Brown, 'A Second New List of Beneventan Manuscripts (III)', Mediaeval Studies , LVI, 1994, p.313 F. Bianchi & A. Magi Spinetti, Bibliografia dei manoscritti in scrittura Beneventana (Rome 1995), iii, pp.28 & 187
